In 1799 William Wordsworth went on a walking tour of the Lake District with his friend and fellow poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He fell in love with Grasmere and Dove Cottage and within a fe months he had set up home here with his sister, Dorothy, to live the life of a poet. For 118 years, Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum has been a living memorial to the Romantic Poets, inspiring countless thousands of visitors from around the world. The guided tour of Wordsworth's beautifully preserved Lakeland cottage gives a fascinating and entertaining insight into life at Dove Cottage over 200 years ago. Discover all about the family members and famous visitors who stayed there and what they got up to. Our permanent exhibition explores the lives of William Wordsworth and his friends and family. It includes diaries, letters and poetry books and manuscripts as well as personal items, clothing and a wealth of pictures and sculpture. Dove Cottage garden, Wordsworth's 'little nook of mountain ground', is open to visitors.
