Based on the former Snibston Colliery, it comprises 7 galleries, a children’s outside play area, wild water play, an under 5s’ section, a café, a shop, plus a former 1940s’ travelling theatre. The emphasise at Snibston is on discovery. There are over 90 interactive exhibits that are suitable for all ages. Visitors can: Lift a mini, make fire the basic way, inflate a hot air balloon and move a rock! The Snibston colliery tours enable visitors to get a real perspective on what it was like to work underground. Local, former miners will provide a guided tour around the scheduled colliery buildings and give an insight into their experiences. You’ll be amazed at the stories they have to tell. Snibston is the home to one of the oldest working railways in the country and visitors can enjoy a ride along the 1km long track on PITT the colliery engine. It’s a great opportunity to appreciate the unique nature of this 180-year old site. For nature lovers there is the Snibston Country Park, adjacent to the museum.
